Saudi Arabia and Syria have signed a defence cooperation agreement, the latest step in the rebuilding of ties between Riyadh and Damascus.
The agreement between the two countries' defence ministries was signed after talks in Riyadh between Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa, according to the Saudi Press Agency via Report.az. The two sides also signed an industry and mineral resources memorandum.
The leaders discussed bilateral relations and regional security, and said crises in the Middle East should be solved diplomatically and tensions reduced, warning that military escalation threatens the stability of the world economy and energy supplies.
For Syria's new leadership, a written defence deal with the region's biggest military spender is a mark of rehabilitation. For Riyadh, it is a stake in shaping what comes next in Syria.
