Kyrgyzstan's president has threatened to take the country's gas network back from Russia's Gazprom.

Sadyr Japarov told residents of the Talas region on November 3 that he has spent two to three years pressing Gazprom to honour its promise to fund gas connections across the whole country. If it keeps failing, he said, the state will take the system back, "as we did with Kumtor", and do the work itself.

Kyrgyzstan sold its gas operator to Gazprom in 2013 for a symbolic $1, under a deal running to 2039. Only about a third of the country is connected to gas, and Japarov admitted he cannot promise new connections while Gazprom owns the pipes.
