Sadyr Japarov told the cabinet to study the ban within a month, saying the drinks damage the gene pool of the country. The move follows growing concern in Bishkek about the health effects of the drinks, which are popular with teenagers and young adults.
If the ban goes ahead, Kyrgyzstan would be one of the first countries in the region to outlaw energy drinks entirely, rather than just restricting sales to minors.
