A woman has joined the combat ranks of Kazakhstan's elite Berkut special forces for the first time.
Kymbat, known by the call sign Kitana, earned her place after representing Kazakhstan at the SWAT Challenge in Dubai as part of the women's Tomiris team. She now serves in one of the National Guard's most demanding units.
Berkut, meaning golden eagle, is Kazakhstan's premier special forces unit. Her appointment is a first for the force, and a marker of how far women have come in the country's security services.
