Uzbekistan has harvested more than 5 million tonnes of cotton this year, a record for the country.
President Shavkat Mirziyoyev told farmers the harvest should bring in 13-14 trillion sums in net profit. He called it a record in the history of the new Uzbekistan, and credited the result to higher yields: the average has risen from 21 to 56 centners per hectare as the area under cotton has been cut by 38 percent.
Next year's target is 65-70 centners per hectare. In Bukhara region, the plan is to reclaim 100,000 hectares of desert land for cotton, grain and orchards, and to push the region's cotton output to 1 million tonnes within three years.
