Kazakhstan's investigation into the Caspian Sea tragedy is widening: 37 criminal cases have now been opened, and eight senior officials are in custody.

The cases follow a sweeping inspection of the Defence Ministry ordered by President Tokayev after servicemen died during exercises on the Caspian. A special commission examined more than 104 ministry facilities and found violations serious enough to open criminal proceedings.

More than 300 people have been questioned in the case. The commission has promised to complete the investigation soon, but no date has been given for charges or a trial.

The deaths during the exercises shook Kazakhstan, and Tokayev has made the inquiry a test of accountability inside the military.
