People in Uzbekistan spend almost half of their household budget just on food.
US Department of Agriculture data puts the share at 44.8%, one of the highest rates in the world. For comparison, households in Kazakhstan spend 41.7% on food, in Belarus 30.6%, and in Russia 25.7%. In Nigeria, the highest in the ranking, the figure is 59.2%.
The number is a blunt measure of living standards: when food eats half the budget, there is little left for anything else. It also helps explain why food prices are the most politically sensitive number in Tashkent.
