Customs officers at Tashkent's international airport have caught several passengers trying to bring undeclared gold jewellery into Uzbekistan, seizing nearly 691 grams worth more than a billion sums.
The passengers, arriving from abroad, had hidden the gold items in their luggage and personal belongings. The haul is valued at 1.02 billion sums, roughly $85,000 at current rates.
Customs checks are continuing into each case. It is the second such bust in recent weeks: an earlier passenger on a Dubai to Tashkent flight was caught with 141 pieces of jewellery and three gold bars.
