Astana is testing facial recognition in children's clubs, to check that free state-funded classes are actually attended.
The pilot uses Face ID systems to verify that children show up for the free clubs and activities the state pays for. The aim is to stop budget money going to classes that children never attend.
The city says the technology only checks attendance, but the move will revive the debate in Kazakhstan about how far biometric checks should reach into everyday life.
