The suspect, 30-year-old Arif Sefa Özdemir, was arrested alive in neighbouring Eskişehir on Thursday evening after opening fire on the gendarmes sent to arrest him. His stolen red van was found stuck in mud near the village of Taşlık, and he had fled on foot.
Police say he stopped cars at random on the road and shot the people inside. The victims had no known connection to each other. Two of the dead were teachers at a middle school in Yukarıtandır village.
Reports say Özdemir had been receiving psychological treatment. The motive is still unclear.
