Students at several universities in Tashkent have been told to install an app called Xavfsiz talaba, or Safe Student, whether they want it or not.
The app holds a student's personal details, course and tuition payment information, and a panic button. It also works as the key for entering the university and the dormitory.
University administrators told students the order came from the prosecutor's office. The Prosecutor General's office says it gave no instruction to force anyone to install the app.
So the mandate exists, but nobody in authority will own it. That is the part students in Tashkent are asking about.
