Citizenship & Residency Brief: Kazakhstan's new entry permit is live, and it changes the door for 85 countries

Kazakhstan has switched on a new entry permit for visitors who used to walk in with just a passport. From July 2027, arriving without it will be grounds to be turned away.

Was: visa-free entry with a passport alone, no paperwork in advance. Now: an electronic authorisation called QazETA, applied for online before travel. Effective: voluntary from 1 November 2026, mandatory from 1 July 2027.

The permit is free and valid for 180 days, covering multiple entries. Travellers apply through the QazETA app or portal at least 72 hours before arrival. It covers nationals of 85 visa-free countries, including citizens of Russia, Kyrgyzstan, Belarus and Armenia, plus Türkiye, the United States, South Korea and European states. It is not a visa, and it does not extend how long you can stay.

The rollout is phased. It began on 1 November at Aktau airport and four road crossings, reaches Almaty and Astana airports on 1 January 2027, every other entry point on 1 March 2027, and becomes mandatory everywhere on 1 July 2027. Children under 16, people aged 65 and over, visa holders and residence permit holders are exempt.

The same week, Kazakhstan granted citizenship to 255 more people, with applications to renounce citizenship falling. The door for visitors is getting a form attached, while the path to citizenship stays open.

What to do with this: if Kazakhstan is on your travel list for next summer or beyond, apply for QazETA early, the approval lasts six months so one application covers several trips. Do not confuse it with a visa, and do not leave it to the last 72 hours. For anyone weighing a longer stay, the exemption list is worth reading first: a residence permit removes the requirement entirely.
