Türkiye's parliament has ratified the Mecca Joint Defense Agreement with Saudi Arabia and Pakistan, completing the pact's domestic approval.
Signed in Mecca on August 7 by President Erdogan, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, the deal treats an armed attack on any one of the three as an attack on all three. It also covers joint weapons production, intelligence sharing, counterterrorism and defence industry cooperation.
Ankara stresses the pact is purely defensive, is not aimed at any country, and is no alternative to NATO. Saudi Arabia and Pakistan had already completed their own ratification. The agreement runs for 10 years.
The timing matters. It lands as Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia escalate, and it gives Türkiye a formal mutual-defence commitment beyond NATO, linking it directly to the Gulf and South Asia.
