Turkish prosecutors have asked a court to jail former minister Fatma Betül Sayan Kaya as part of a sweeping probe into Türkiye's capital markets.

Kaya, family and social policies minister from 2016 to 2018, testified for two hours and 15 minutes at Istanbul's courthouse on Thursday. Prosecutors then referred her to a judge with a request for arrest on suspicion of violating the Capital Markets Law and membership in a criminal organisation. The judge has not yet ruled.

Investigators suspect Kaya and her husband Ilyas traded on privileged information in shares of Ozata Denizcilik, turning a 163 million lira investment into about 2.1 billion lira in four months. The couple later returned the gains through a voluntary repayment scheme.

Her husband faces a travel ban and regular sign-in requirements, and the former head of the Capital Markets Board faces the same measures. The probe now covers 217 suspects, with 85 arrested.
