Trump says a Russia-Ukraine deal is 'very close'
US President Donald Trump says a deal to end the war in Ukraine is 'very close', and that it could stretch far beyond the two countries at war.
"I'm telling you, there will be a deal. It will be a big deal, and it will not only affect Ukraine. It will be large-scale. I can even say it could affect all of Europe," Trump said, confirming he had met Russian envoy Kirill Dmitriev.
Trump called the coming agreement 'big' and 'beautiful', and said it would delight everyone involved. He gave no details of what the deal would contain, or when it would be signed.
Why it matters: Trump has been promising a settlement for months, and this is his most confident prediction yet. But no draft has been shown in public, Ukraine has not confirmed any terms, and previous deadlines have passed without a deal. The claim is his, and the proof will be in whether anything is actually signed.
