ANALYSIS: Trump's 'very close' Ukraine deal, and what would have to be true

Donald Trump says a deal to end the war in Ukraine is 'very close', that it will be 'big' and 'beautiful', and that it could affect all of Europe. He confirmed meeting Russian envoy Kirill Dmitriev, and his words were carried almost identically by American, Azerbaijani and Russian-leaning outlets within the hour, which tells you the White House wanted this heard.

Strip away the adjectives and three things would have to be true for a deal to actually exist. First, Moscow and Kyiv would have to agree on territory, and on that point they have been furthest apart: Russia demands land it does not fully control, Ukraine refuses to cede it. Second, Europe would have to accept a settlement made largely over its head, when the deal is said to 'affect all of Europe'. Third, someone would have to enforce it, and no enforcement mechanism has ever been described.

The context matters. Trump has predicted an imminent settlement before, and each time the fighting continued. His envoy met Dmitriev, but no draft, no date and no Ukrainian confirmation accompanied the claim. The most likely reading is that this is pressure as much as prediction: a signal to Kyiv and to European capitals that Washington wants movement, and soon.

What to watch: any written text or framework emerging from the Dmitriev channel; whether Kyiv confirms or cools the claim in the next 48 hours; whether European leaders are consulted before anything is announced; and whether the fighting on the ground, especially the strikes on Ukraine's energy grid, pauses or intensifies while the talking goes on.
